Camelots successor, Allwyn, has teamed up with the technology powerhouse Vodafone to revamp the UK National Lottery. Vodafone will play a crucial role in updating the lottery’s technological infrastructure.

This collaboration aims to introduce a modern, mobile-centric approach to lottery participation in the UK. Imagine simplified online purchases and an overall enhanced user experience. Allwyn is committed to supporting existing lottery retailers, and Vodafone will equip these shops with digital skills development.

Furthermore, Vodafone will utilize its UK-based data centers to host the lottery system and provide network connectivity for Allwyn’s offices.

Both organizations are enthusiastic about this alliance. Vodafone views it as a chance to bring essential modernization to a system that has remained largely unchanged since its inception. Allwyn considers it a pivotal element of its successful National Lottery bid and a means to significantly enhance the lottery’s operational efficiency.

The competition for the United Kingdom’s fourth National Lottery permit was fierce, with Allwyn emerging victorious over Camelot, the company that had managed the lottery for the preceding three periods. Unwilling to easily surrender its control, Camelot initiated legal proceedings to delay the transition. Nevertheless, they ultimately acknowledged their loss and consented to transfer their UK lottery business to Allwyn. The formal handover is scheduled for February 2024.

Allwyn’s aspirations reach beyond the UK; they have targeted a controlling interest in the Irish National Lottery. Rumors suggest they are engaging with Swiss financial powerhouse UBS to secure funding for the acquisition. The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) currently possesses the majority stake (80%) in the Irish Lottery, with their ownership slated to continue until 2034. However, it appears they are amenable to selling, and Allwyn is in contention alongside other industry leaders like Scientific Games and Française des Jeux.
