The Land Down Under has sent ripples through the internet poker community by outlawing it under their recently passed Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill. Although this initially appears to be a blow for Australian poker enthusiasts, the government has suggested that this could be a short-term solution. Rumors circulating suggest they are actually investigating the establishment of a completely regulated online poker sector.

Senator David Leyonhjelm, an advocate for online poker in Australia, has disclosed that the government is examining the potential for granting licenses to providers within the nation. This action is part of a broader initiative to combat unlicensed sports wagering companies targeting Australians.

The objective is to guarantee that any entity accepting wagers from Australians possesses an Australian license. Regrettably, this has unintentionally ensnared online poker in the process, despite attempts to keep it distinct. Consequently, prominent platforms like PokerStars and 888 have been forced to withdraw from the Australian market, at least temporarily. The destiny of online poker in Australia remains uncertain, with many holding out hope for the imminent emergence of a regulated market.

Senator Yarem continues to advocate for the creation of a fresh regulatory framework for gambling in Australia, taking inspiration from the UK Gambling Commission, despite recent obstacles. He stressed, “Australian internet poker enthusiasts merit a secure, governed space to engage in their pastime without pressure to utilize overseas platforms, and I intend to see this initiative to its completion.”
